  1. Autism is a rare disorder, generally present
  2. from birth, characterized by a withdrawn 
  3. state and a failure to develop normally in
  4. language or social behaviour. Although the
  5. autistic child may, rarely, show signs of 
  6. high intelligence, many have impaired 
  7. intellect. The cause of autism is unknown, 
  8. but is thought to involve a number of 
  9. factors, possibly including an inherent 
  10. abnormality of the child's brain. Special 
  11. education may bring about some improvement.
